What is TMJ Disorder?

More than just issues with your teeth and gums, your jaws are another reason to visit the dentist. Pains in the mouth can be very uncomfortable and one of such chronic pains occurs with TMJ disorder.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder affects the jaws making eating or talking very difficult. This discomfort could be mild in some instances and for some people might be very serious affecting not just talking and eating but with severe aches. In these severe conditions, special treatments might be required.

Whatever your dental challenge, TMJ and Invisalign Woodland Hills is your trusted solution to help ease TMJ pain. With several years of experience in treating dental issues, you can be assured that you would receive only the best treatments for all your dental needs.

Temporomandibular Joint

Pronounced tem-puh-roe-man-di-bu-lur, is a joint that connects the lower jawbone to the skull. It is a sliding hinge joint located on each side of the face just in front of the ears. As a joint, two bones meet here separated by an articular disc.

This joint assists in the movement of the jaw aiding activities like talking and chewing. Apart from the bones, the joints have ligaments and muscles that facilitate movement. There are also nerves that assist in monitoring blood flow and as receptors. Thus if there is an issue with mouth movement or pain, you should have your TMJ checked.

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is a condition of pain where the muscles and ligaments around the jaw are inflamed often as a result of irritation. There are several causes for this condition but a misalignment of the teeth could cause the muscles to be stressed or tightened. This stress from the tightened muscles and ligaments is felt as pain that could travel to the facial muscles, the teeth or the neck.

TMJ is not life-threatening but can create great discomfort. This uncomfortable pain could be mild in some cases and very severe in some others. Nonetheless, with the right attention from an expert, it can be properly treated.

Causes of TMJ Dysfunction

In many cases, the exact cause of TMJ is not known. However, several cases are caused by the following and could be diagnosed by a specialist;

  • Injury to the muscles, tissues and ligaments around the jaw as a result of direct impact.
  • Dislocation of the disc in the joints or a misalignment of the joint at the jaw could also cause TMJ disorder.
  • Teeth grinding (Bruxism): teeth grinding or clenching can occur once in a while. This occasionally does not cause damage to the teeth or jaw. However, regular teeth grinding could damage a person's teeth, cause tensions in the jaw muscles and invariably lead to TMJ. While some people grind their teeth consciously, some others do that in their sleep; this requires prompt medical attention.
  • Trauma and stress could cause tensions in the jaws resulting in pain or discomfort.
  • Improper bite could cause a misalignment of the jaw putting a strain on the muscles of the joint.
  • Arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis could damage the cartilage at the temporomandibular joint.
  • Some genetics might predispose a person to teeth grinding causing stiffness in the jaw muscles.
  • Pathologic conditions such as giant cell tumors, osteosarcoma and aneurysmal bone cyst could cause discomfort in your jaws.

Symptoms of TMJ

Some common symptoms of TMJ include Headaches, Dizziness, Pain or tenderness in the jaw, on one or both sides of the TMJ joints, Cheek pain, Neck pain and Shoulder pain, Ear pain and or ringing in the ear (tinnitus), Pains in the facial muscles, Tooth pain, Clicking, popping, grating or grinding noise in the jaw when opening or closing your mouth, Locking jaws causes difficulties in opening or closing your mouth, Teeth grinding, Difficulty in chewing, Asymmetrical alignment of the teeth, or Swelling on the face at the affected side.

This list of symptoms is often pointed to TMJ but you should get a confirmation from a doctor especially if you experience pains and noise in your jaws. Seek medical attention if the pain in the jaw is persistent and we would walk you through the possible causes and most appropriate solutions for you.

TMJ Headaches and Migraines

A common and early symptom of TMJ dysfunction is headaches and migraines. This is because the inflammation at the jaw could travel through the muscles and ligaments making them tight and stressed. The result is aches in the skull, face and neck. This stress could also translate into one-sided headaches known as migraines.

Many people suffering from TMJ complain of intense headaches which could be a result of the inflammation of the jaw. These headaches are tight dull headaches that are often steady. For migraines induced by TMJ, they are persistent headaches occurring on the affected side.

Because many people know little about TMJ, you could spend so much time and resources treating headaches and migraines without a permanent solution. Consequently, if TMJ is resolved, the stress on the jaw is removed and the headaches and migraines removed.

However, it cannot be concluded that every headache is a sign of TMJ as headaches could occur as a result of stress, poor sleep or issues with diets. Thus, you would need a proper diagnosis and confirmation with other symptoms to ascertain the cause of your headache.
